# Themes and skins: personalize your Herm terminal UI

> Browse Herm themes, use the live picker, fix tmux color issues, and switch skins that pair a theme with an eikon preset.

Herm ships with a source-defined theme catalog. The picker previews themes without restarting, then stores your choice in `~/.hermes/herm/tui.json` or `$HERM_CONFIG_DIR/tui.json`.

The default first-boot theme is `tokyonight`.

## Open the theme picker

* Type `/theme` in the composer.
* Press `<leader>t`. The default leader is `Ctrl+X`.

Use the arrow keys to move through themes. Press `Return` to apply the highlighted theme.

## Built-in themes

The table is generated from `src/theme/manifest.ts` in the Herm source repo.

## Fix colors in tmux

If colors look washed out or banded inside tmux, configure tmux to advertise 256-color support.

```bash theme={null}
set -g default-terminal "tmux-256color"
```

Reload tmux with `tmux source ~/.tmux.conf`, then restart Herm.

## Skins

A skin applies a Hermes Agent skin setting. When Herm has a matching theme or bundled eikon, it mirrors those visuals too.

```text theme={null}
/skin [name]
```

Built-in skin names are defined in Herm source:

| Skin             | Character              |
| ---------------- | ---------------------- |
| `default`        | Standard Hermes look   |
| `ares`           | Warm red               |
| `mono`           | Monochrome             |
| `slate`          | Dark navy              |
| `daylight`       | Light palette          |
| `warm-lightmode` | Warm light palette     |
| `poseidon`       | Deep ocean blue        |
| `sisyphus`       | High-contrast charcoal |
| `charizard`      | Warm orange            |

Type `/skin` without an argument to browse available names.

## Where preferences are saved

Theme and skin selections are written to:

```text theme={null}
~/.hermes/herm/tui.json
```

If `HERM_CONFIG_DIR` is set, Herm writes `tui.json` there instead.
